The story begins in the early 2000s. In 2001, a group of private investors led by Mark Reynier and legendary master distiller Jim McEwan bought the derelict Bruichladdich distillery and brought it back to life. However, their ancient, purely analog production equipment caught the attention of US Military Intelligence (The Pentagon). Due to a bureaucratic blunder, a automated system flagged the distillery’s Victorian machinery as a potential site for manufacturing chemical weapons.
Rather than taking offense, the Bruichladdich team responded with classic Scottish wit. They immediately printed yellow t-shirts declaring themselves producers of "Whiskies of Mass Distinction." The comedy peaked in 2005 when a real, yellow Ministry of Defence robotic submarine went missing off the coast of Islay and was recovered by local fishermen. Bruichladdich combined these two bizarre events to launch the original Yellow Submarine bottling. Today, a replica of that very submarine still sits proudly outside the distillery.
