Celebrating 60 Years of Tamnavulin: A Milestone in Speyside

Established on the rural banks of the River Livet in 1966 by Invergordon Distillers, Tamnavulin was born during a historic mid-60s construction boom in the Scotch industry, driven by soaring post-war global demand. The distillery was architecturally designed as a highly efficient, modern facility with a primary, industrial mission: to provide a clean, consistently high-quality, and fruity malt spirit to serve as a vital backbone for iconic blended Scotch portfolios. Its name, translating from Gaelic to "mill on the hill," pays historical homage to the former carding mill that sits adjacent to the site, connecting the cutting-edge distillery to the traditional agricultural roots of the Speyside region.

For nearly three decades, the distillery operated under the radar as a vital blending workhorse. However, following changes in corporate ownership, Tamnavulin faced the harsh economic realities of the 1990s whisky downturn, leading to its closure and being mothballed in 1995. The stills remained silent for twelve years until 2007, when a major acquisition by Whyte & Mackay sparked a comprehensive, multi-million-pound modernization project. Rather than keeping it in the shadows of blends, the new management strategically repositioned Tamnavulin, utilizing its unique, six-still configuration to launch a dedicated single malt range. This pivotal transition successfully transformed the distillery from a hidden industry secret into a highly respected, rapidly growing, and globally celebrated single malt category leader known for its signature double-cask maturations.
