Tasting Notes

Elijah Craig Small Batch

Elijah Craig Small Batch is matured for 8 to 12 years in new charred American oak barrels before being bottled at 47% ABV (94 proof). Considered the flagship expression of Heaven Hill Distillery, it perfectly embodies the brand’s “Small Batch Bourbon” philosophy. Named after Baptist minister Elijah Craig — often credited as the first person to age whiskey in charred oak barrels in America — this bourbon’s mash bill consists of 78% corn, 12% malted barley, and 10% rye.

Nose Rich aromas of vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, brown sugar, and honey are followed by baked fruits, leather, and a hint of raisin.
Palate Just like on the nose, notes of vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, and honey are prominent. The alcohol is well-integrated, delivering a warm, enveloping sensation. Toasted oak, baked apple, and roasted coffee round out the palate — full-bodied and aromatic.
Finish Long and lingering, with cinnamon, charred oak, and bittersweet cocoa notes.
Overall: Elijah Craig Small Batch is a bold and flavor-packed bourbon, offering the kind of intensity expected from a higher-proof whiskey. The nose is complex and inviting, while the palate — though slightly dominated by alcohol — remains balanced and rich. It shines neat or on the rocks, and makes an excellent base for a strong Old Fashioned.
